Gate Proportions

Westerners can be excused if they fail to build graceful Japanese garden gates because there are no plan books available in English.  The author of this article examined Japanese-language blueprints of seven garden gates and produced a set of composite proportions, including roof pitch, gate height, and post thickness.  As long as these proportions are observed, a traditional-looking Japanese garden gate can be successfully constructed.
